Greetings and Happy November from Room 4T!

Our class had a spooktacular wonderful Halloween party! We were able to wrap 4 adorable mummies and created a classroom sized web. I would like to thank Sabune Winkler and Linda Medwar for organizing this fun party. I would also like to thank all the parents who provided snacks. I know that the students loved it!  Finally, thank you to the parents ( Marielle Allor, Eric Boehlke, Denise Carter, and Hana Safranek) who were able to come into the classroom. I really appreciated your help.

English Language Arts
We are continuing working to work on comprehension strategies using nonfiction text.  This month we will be reviewing the Inferring Unit, and starting the unit Determining Importance. The  Inferring Unit’s  the focus is on using text to create thoughtful inferences as well as inferring themes from text.   For each of these units we are encouraging students to read with a question in mind.  Determining Importance teaches children to take meaningful notes and target key information.

Another exciting learning opportunity will be our book club reading and enjoying a selection of books from the nominees of the Massachusetts Children’s Book Award.

Writing
We are continuing to work on realistic fiction stories.  All students have completed one piece and  we are starting the process again to build each student’s writing portfolio.  Our main goal is for students to create a believable character with a believable problem and then take their character through the story arc.   There are many wonderful and creative writers in our classroom! I hope you will enjoy reading the works as much as I do.

Math
Multiplication!!!  Our mathematician’s main primary focus is using arrays to show multiplication problems.  At this point it is essential for your child to have their facts memorized. Happy reviewing!

Research
We are digging deeper in our studies of Teosinte! Classes are working on a "stained glass window”' and  comparing life in Arlington to that of Teosinte.

Science
Students are observing and measuring the features of weather. They will be building weather instruments in the near future. Be prepared to see some of their very own weather instruments in the future. Stay tuned…

Social Studies-
Students are honing their geography and map reading skills. Soon they will begin their study of the Northeast.
